This belt buckle is made of abalone sea shell pieces and metal. I highly suspect that the metal is sterling silver. It is marked on the back in the area of what I call the tooth or claw, (the piece that sticks in to the punched out hole of the leather to secure it when wearing it) but that 'tooth" was placed right on the marking and the only word I can make out is "Mexico". Most of the older belt buckles like this one that you find online states them to be sterling. Also, I did the magnet test and the magnet did not stick, which it a big clue to sterling silver.
The buckle has nine abalone shell pieces in two rows. The abalone is very colorful with nice vibrant iridescent colors. It measures 2.25 by 1.5 inches and has a 1.25 inch bar opening in the back.
I purchased it at an estate sale so have no personal information regarding it's age. If I had to guess, I'd say its probably from the 1960s or 1970s. It is in excellent condition.
