Vintage 1948 metal lunchbox featuring depictions of Joe, Humphrey, and Little Max.
Created by Ham Fisher in 1921, by 1948 the comic strip was ranked as one of the 5 most popular newspaper comic strips.
The box is signed on the top "Ham Fisher, New York". It measures 7 inches side to side, 4.75 inches front to back, and is 4 inches tall.
The colors and graphics are still vibrant. The handles are in working condition.
I purchased it at an estate sale. When I obtained it there was a small child's cup inside, I believe made of aluminum. One side of the cup says "Old Mother Hubbard" and shows a lady and her dog standing in front of a cupboard. The other side says "The Cow Jumped Over The Moon" and shows a cow and a moon. I don't believe that this child's cup originally came with the lunch box, but it was in there when I purchased it so I will send it along also. It appears that the cup may have had some dents around the upper lip, but someone has straightened them out fairly well.
CONDITION of the lunch box:
There are no major dents. There are some small scrapes which should be expected on a child's item that's over 71 years old. As you can see in my photos below, there are spots of rust. The worst spot is on the lid, lower right corner. I'm told that steel wool will remove rust, but I've never used that so would prefer to leave that for the new owner.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT POSSIBLE PARTIAL REFUND OF SHIPPING CHARGES:
Every January the postal service increases shipping charges. Previously, shipping charges were based solely on weight and zip code. This year the postal service went a bit overboard. Now, with this year's increase, the postal service has divided the United States in to 8 zones and all packages are charged by weight, size, and destination zone. This latest increase has added an additional .96 cents to up to $2.83 on packages, depending on their destination. I try to absorb some of the new charges and haven't increased my shipping charges in several years, but that's getting harder with each increase.
To complicate things even further, Google will not promote or show items for sale unless they have a designated cost, or unless the seller uses calculated shipping. My web host is not equipped to figure calculated shipping, so I have to quote a shipping charge using the east coast as the final destination and then refund over payments. When I return the overage, I usually do so by including cash inside the package when it's shipped. My feedback page will show verification that I do return overpayments.
COMBINED SHIPPING INFORMATION
I do combine shipping on multiple items purchased as long as all items can fit safely into a single box. However, my web host does not have the ability to calculate multiple item shipping costs. At checkout, you will be charged full shipping price on each item purchased and I will refund the appropriate amount of overpayment. If you are uncomfortable with any of that, you can send me an email with your zip code and stating which items you'll be purchasing and I'll calculate the correct combined shipping charges and send you a custom invoice.
Due to claims that merchandise is not being received at various international countries (although Customs tracking verifies the delivery), I will no longer be able to process international orders unless payment is made with U.S. currency, including conversion fees. Orders will be processed after funds have cleared a U.S. bank. PAYPAL WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR INTERNATIONAL PURCHASES. Seller reserves the right to void any international transactions where contact has not been made prior to purchasing.
All items in my listings come from either estate or garage sales. I do not know if they came from homes where smoking or pets were present. All items are sold in the same condition as when I received them.
