Jaycee Dugard was just eleven years old in 1991 when she was abducted from a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe California. The bus stop was in sight of her home. She was held captive for more than eighteen years by a couple named Phillip and Nancy Garrido and forced to live in cages and tents in the back yard of a home in Antioch California. Jaycee gave birth to two daughers during her imprisonment.
On August 26, 2009, Garrido showed up for a meeting with his parole officer. He brought Jaycee, her daughters, and his wife Nancy with him. Their unusual behavior raised suspicions and an investigation revealed the tent behind the Garridos" home where Jaycee had been living for nearly two decades.
A Stolen Life was written by Jaycee herself and covers the period from the time of her abduction in 1991 up until the present. In her stark, compelling narrative, she opens up about what she experienced and she offers an extraordinary account of courage and resilience.
On a personal note-, I lived in Antioch California for many years during the time that this was all going on. I lived about a mile from the Garrido home. I don't think I'll ever forget the day Jaycee Dugard was rescued. I was sitting in my home office with my windows open and could hear off in the distance what sounded like a large amount of helicopters coming our way. There must have been at least a dozen helicopters. I know most were television news copters because I could see their logos, that's how close they were. They circled for what seemed like hours. I didn't know what was going on but I knew it had to be big.
Reading this book, it was shocking when Jaycee talked about the grocery stores, the kmart, the gas stations she went to with the Garridos. I'd been going to those same places for years. It's one of those things where you wonder if you were there at the same time. Days later, when things calmed down, we drove past the house where she was held captive. It's a semi-rural area and I'd been on that street so many times going to yard and estate sales to gather inventory for my website. It gives you the chills knowing you were that close and could have maybe helped had you known.
