Elephant bells were hung from both sides of an elephant to alert passers-by to take heed on the crowded narrow paths in India.
This elephant bell measures roughly 3 inches, or about the size of a baseball. It has a knob handle and a claw base. The clapper is intact. It is brass and has an etched design, possibly a floral pattern around the upper mid section. The etched areas are burnt red in color.
There are no markings, but when I purchased it at a local estate sale, the information card stated it to be from the 1940 to 1950 time frame. I have not cleaned or polished it.
