This is a first edition book by Kate Peck Kent, a professor emerita of anthropology at the University of Denver and a research associate at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe New Mexico. It was published by School of American Research Press, Santa Fe New Mexico.

This book traces the history of Navajo weaving from about 1650, when loom processes were learned from the Pueblo Indians, to the present day of regional styles and commercial markets. It describes changes in yarns, dyes, designs, and types of textiles resulting from trade with Spanish-Americans, Mexicans, and finally Anglo-Americans. In a highly original conclusion, the author describes the cultural traits that allowed the Navajos to accept stylistic change so readily, and she searches for the elements native to Navajo aesthetic values. This is a fascinating account for anyone who has admired the beauty and technical skill that have given Navajo weaving its tremendous popularity.

It is a soft cover book with 139 pages. There are many color and black & white photos. It is copyrighted 1985 and is stated to be a first edition.

Buyer to pay USPS Media Mail delivery charges of $6.95. Depending on your location, Media Mail can take 4 to 10 days for delivery. If you would prefer Priority Mail for quicker delivery just let me know and I can give you a quote on that service. Delivery to Alaska, Hawaii, or American territories will have to be via Priority Mail as the postal service will not quote a delivery time for Media Mail to those locations.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING CHARGES: Twice yearly, and again in November for the holiday season (so three times per year) the postal service increases shipping charges. This is what they call their "Delivering For America" plan in which they hope to become profitable. It's a 10 year plan that started in 2021, so we've got years to go with multiple price increases on shipping charges each year. I try to absorb the new charges and haven't increased my shipping charges in three years. This year unfortunately, I have to if I want to stay in business. I'll try to keep it reasonable and even absorb some of the increases when possible.

I do combine shipping on multiple items purchased as long as all items will safely fit into a single box or envelope. However, my web host is not set up to calculate multiple item shipping costs. At checkout, you will be charged full shipping price on each item purchased and I will refund the appropriate amount of overpayment. If you are uncomfortable with that, you can send me an email with your zip code and stating which items you'll be purchasing and I'll calculate the correct combined shipping charges and send you a custom invoice.

INTERNATIONAL PURCHASED: Sorry, I do not ship to locations outside of the United States.

All items in my listings come from either estate or garage sales. I do not know if they come from homes where smoking or pets were present. Unless otherwise stated, all items are sold in the same condition as when I obtained them.
