33st U.S. Army Infantry DUI insignia pin. The pin measures roughly 1.25 by 1.25 inches. The motto of "Ridentes Venimus" runs across the bottom. The motto translates to "Smiling We Come".
Most all of these pins have the maker's mark on the back and this one may have it also, but the previous owner placed a small sticker on the back and wrote "33rd inf regt" on the sticker. I can tell that sticker has been there for a long time so I really don't want to remove it to see if anything is under it.
Researching this pin on line and through the U.S. Office of Heraldry I see many statements that it is from the WWII era. A big clue that it is from that time frame is the type of closure on the back. The closure is called a "safety catch" but I call it a safety pin type.
CONDITION: The pin is in excellent condition with no major scrapes or scratches. All enamel and metal pieces are present with no chips or cracks.
The pin is part of a large collection of insignia pins that I purchased at an estate sale. It is attached to a small thin cardboard square. The writing on the cardboard was put there by the previous owner and that's great because I can't imagine how long it would take me to look up and obtain information on over 700 pins. The previous owner wrote "33rd Infantry" on the cardboard holder.
