Beautiful single mosaic red rose sitting on a green background of very small pieces of stone / glass. The rose centerpiece is surrounded by a gold tone border.
The brooch is oval in shape and measures about 1/2 by 1.5 inches. It is stamped on the back "Italy". The closure is known as a 'safety catch" (a safety pin type closure).
As to the age, I purchased the brooch at an estate sale so there were no sales people there with firsthand knowledge. Knowing that it is an older piece, I researched it to try to determine the age. I found a website about how to identify and date items by the type of clasp and closures. I found the exact safety catch in a photo and the description stated that this type was used from about 1910 and stayed popular until the early 1940s. Looking at the piece I would say that is absolutely a strong possibility as it has the look and feel of that era.
The brooch is in wonderful condition with no missing or chipped stones and it doesn't look as if it was ever worn much, if at all.
