This lovely brooch pin is marked on the back “ORA”. It measures 2.75 inches by 3/4 inch. It is very well made and sturdy. There are no missing or broken stones.
It is an unusually made brooch. On the back there is some type of mechanism that looks as if it makes the brooch expandable, but no matter how I pull, push, turn, etc, nothing happens. I’ve looked all over the internet to try to determine how the back piece works, but can’t find anything.
The age of the pin is unknown to me as I purchased it at an estate sale. Researching the ORA company, I find the following statement “Although this Chicago based company began before the 1920s, the ORA signature was first used in the late 1930's”. If I had to guess, I’d say the brooch is possibly from the 1950s.
As for the stones, there are a couple of jewelry history websites that state that the ORA company used either crystals or rhinestones in their jewelry pieces. Unfortunately, I do not know which stones are in this piece.
