I was surprised to find a glass eye at a local estate sale. I'd never seen one before, and didn't realize they were so life like in appearance. I spoke with the seller and she said it was her grandfathers. The story she told was that her grandfather lost an eye as a young man in Germany. He came to the United States in the 1940s and had the eye when he came here. So, he would have obtained it while still living in Germany. She said that as kids, he loved to scare them by popping his eye out. She said he passed away in 1972 but that she always held on to the eye and that it's been kept in a little container ever since.
Researching this, I do see that most glass eyes were special made and hand blown. It was quite an art to make them.
This one is green in color. It has small red veins in the glass. Measuring it is a bit difficult. I turned it over and measures across the bottom from side to side and it's 1 inch across.
Today, people use them either for their intended purpose, or they add them to a medical oddities collection, and jewelry is even being made from these pieces.
