Old wood stoves were used since the start of having a fire burn indoors for cooking and to provide for heat during the colder months.
This type of spindle flue damper was used in the old wood burning stoves. It would control the airflow.
You rarely see the old wood burning stoves any longer unless you're out in a cabin in the woods and even rarer to find one this old. Today these spindles or dampers are valued as wall art or used for other rustic decor.
This spindle measures 6 inches in diameter. One side is embossed with ""Reversible Steel Spindle Pat July 20, 1915, Pat No. 1697100". (NOTE - I'm not positive that what I put for the patent number is correct as it's very hard to read.) The other side is embossed with "Griswold, Erie PA U.S.A., American 6 in".
As for the condition, it's in remarkable shape for being possibly over 100 years old. It does have a good amount of rust though. I have not tried to turn the handle as I don't know which way to turn it and I wouldn't want to damage it. I can tell you that the handle is very tight.

SPECIAL NOTE about SHIPPING CHARGES: Twice yearly and again in November for the holiday season (so 3 times each year) the postal service increases shipping charges. This is what they call their “Delivering for America” plan in which they hope to become profitable. It’s a 10 year plan that started in 2021, so we’ve got years to go with multiple price increases each year. I try to absorb some of the new charges and haven't increased my shipping charges in three years. This year, unfortunately, I have to increase the shipping.
