The Raphael Tuck & Sons Company began in London in 1866. They boasted that they were "By Special Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen". It began as a small business selling prints and frames in a shop on London's Union Street. The business was expanded to include lithographs, postcards, greeting cards, Christmas cards, illustrated story books, paper toys, and novelty paper items. The company continued its operations into the Second World War, when the German bombings of London destroyed the company's offices on December 29, 1940.

This clown (which was called a doll), was one of their products. It is made of a thin cardboard. It measures 9.5 inches tall. It probably started out about a quarter of an inch taller, but a little piece of his hat is missing. For being over 100 years old, the coloring is still very vibrant and in my opinion, it's in excellent condition.

The way it works is that there is a string attached to be back with brads. When the string is pulled his arms raise.

I spent quite a bit of time researching this piece. I never did find the exact one, but found several very similar and some had the same type of writing on the back. All of them stated they are from the time period of 1900 to 1910.

CONDITION:
As stated above, there is a small piece, maybe 1/4 inch of his hat missing at the very top. At the bottom there a hole at the bottom where his legs meet, but I've studied it with a jeweler's loop and I believe that is original and supposed to be there. Also at the bottom, in the red area it looks like there is a very tiny shaved area, but it's so small I can't even measure it.

I can't tell you much more about it. I obtained it at an estate sale, so there was no one to ask about any details. I assume it is complete. You will receive it exactly like it was when I obtained it.

SHIPPING:
Although this could be mailed in a regular large envelope, (and I can do that if you want to accept the responsibility), I am quoting delivery via USPS Flat Rate Envelope. I'm choosing that means because the Flat Rate envelopes are cardboard and maybe the postman won't bend it. Also, I will put "Do Not Bend or Fold" stickers on it, and by doing so the postal rules state that makes it a 'parcel" and it can not go by regular First Class Mail.

Buyer to pay $7.95 for Priority Mail Flat Rate insured packaging.

SHIPPING CHARGE INFO:
I do combine shipping on multiple items purchased. However, my web host is not set up to calculate multiple item shipping costs. At checkout, you will be charged full shipping price on each item purchased and I will refund the appropriate amount of overpayment. If you are uncomfortable with that, you can send me an email with your zip code and stating which items you'll be purchasing and I'll calculate the correct combined shipping charges and send you a custom invoice.

Also, every January the postal service increases shipping charges. This year, many price increases were a bit steep with some package categories adding as much as a dollar on to an already high shipping charge. I try to absorb some of the new charges but that's getting harder with each increase.

International shipping charges also took a tremendous leap. International shipping will now depend on the country. Buyer must contact seller for international shipping charges before making a purchase. Seller reserves the right to void any international transactions where contact has not been made prior to purchasing.

All items in my listings come from either estate or garage sales. I do not know if they came from homes where smoking or pets were present. All items are sold in the same condition as when I received them.
