This pin was part of a large lot of over 700 military DUI DI insignia pins purchased at an estate sale. The seller was an avid collector of military items and he specialized in the WWII and Vietnam era.
Unfortunately, I do not know the date of this pin, but researching it online I found the following information:
"The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) traces its roots to the eve of America's entry into World War II, when the U.S. Army established a secret school at the Presidio of San Francisco to teach the Japanese language."
The pin measures 1-1/8 inch top to bottom by 1-1/8 inch side to side. It is gold, red, and blue and has an enamel finish. The words "Defense Language Institute" is across the bottom. The back has a double clutch holder. When purchased, the pin was attached to a small card that says "Defense Lang. Inst."
QUANTITY:
I have 2 of this particular pin. Both are the same on the front. All state on the back that they were made by N.S. Meyer, New York and have the Meyer double shield logo. One also says "Made In U.S.A.", one does not.
CONDITION:
1 of the 2 is in great condition. The pin that is not marked as being made in the U.S.A. appears to be older and has some scratches, not deep and not cuts. I will mail the good one first.
Although small, when wrapped it will exceed the postal limit of one quarter of an inch for normal envelope mailing. Delivery will be via USPS First Class Mail Package. Buyer to pay delivery charges of $3.50. To avoid duplicate shipping charges, please advise seller of desired quantity so I can change the shipping charge and prevent you from being over charged.
