Dunham Carrigan Hayden Company began in business in 1848/1849. They were the leading supplier of wholesale hardware and mining supplies out of San Francisco. This is an original general hardware catalog and is rare and scarce.
It is a massive book. There are 2,342 numbered pages plus 30 roman numeral pages. The roman numeral pages lists various useful information such as measurement charts, size charts, etc. I believe the covers are press board type of material (at least that's what it feels like), and they are cloth covered. I've never seen a book that was so thick that the covers were screwed together. The book measures 11.5 inches square and is 2.75 inches thick.
There is no date or catalog number that I could find. I did find a reference to one of these catalogs that said it was from 1922 and contained 2398 pages. Since catalogs grow in size each year due to new items being added, and if the 1922 date I saw is correct, then it would stand to reason that this catalog should be from the early to mid 1920s.
There is everything conceivable hardware item in this catalog that anyone could possibly need. It includes not only tools (and some strange ones at that), but also guns, bicycles, household items, some personal items, appliance parts, bug control items, hoses, heaters, alarm clocks, coffee makers, carts, animal feeders, fishing baits, cemetery vases, something called butts, wheels, vegetable garden supplies, and on and on….you get the picture.
For being almost 100 years old, I think the book is in wonderful condition. There is minor edge wear to the covers and the pages have picked up a tinge of brown during the years. Obviously I did not check all 2,342 pages but I did scan many of them. I saw one page with an old faded pencil notation, but didn't see any torn or destroyed pages.
I almost hate to part with it. I could spend hours looking at all the items used and needed 'back in the day'.
It is a very heavy book so I will mail it via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate shipping. Buyer to pay US Postal Service delivery charges of $9.95. If you live in or close to Nevada, regular Priority Mail may be an less expensive option and if so I will refund the overpayment.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT POSSIBLE PARTIAL REFUND OF SHIPPING CHARGES:
Every January the postal service increases shipping charges. Previously, shipping charges were based solely on weight and zip code. This year the postal service went a bit overboard. Now, with this year's increase, the postal service has divided the United States in to 8 zones and all packages are charged by weight, size, and destination zone. This latest increase has added an additional .96 cents to up to $2.83 on packages, depending on their destination. I try to absorb some of the new charges and haven't increased my shipping charges in several years, but that's getting harder with each increase.
To complicate things even further, Google will not promote or show items for sale unless they have a designated cost, or unless the seller uses calculated shipping. My web host is not equipped to figure calculated shipping, so I have to quote a shipping charge using the east coast as the final destination and then refund over payments. When I return the overage, I usually do so by including cash inside the package when it's shipped. My feedback page will show verification that I do return overpayments.
COMBINED SHIPPING INFORMATION
I do combine shipping on multiple items purchased as long as all items can fit safely into a single box. However, my web host does not have the ability to calculate multiple item shipping costs. At checkout, you will be charged full shipping price on each item purchased and I will refund the appropriate amount of overpayment. If you are uncomfortable with any of that, you can send me an email with your zip code and stating which items you'll be purchasing and I'll calculate the correct combined shipping charges and send you a custom invoice.
International shipping charges also took a tremendous leap. International shipping will now depend on the country. Buyer must contact seller for international shipping charges before making a purchase. Seller reserves the right to void any international transactions where contact has not been made prior to purchasing.
All items in my listings come from either estate or garage sales. I do not know if they came from homes where smoking or pets were present. All items are sold in the same condition as when I received them.
