Back in the day, women dressed for all occasions, even during dinner at home. Dresses were the norm for attire. Dresses that zipped in the back could be a real challenge, at least until zipper pulls came along.
This gadget is called a "Zip Her". It's a small hinged metal box measuring just over 1.25 inches square by one half inch deep containing a chain with a hook on the end. The chain, including the hook measures about 17 inches long. The hook is put through the end of the zipper and brought up and over the shoulder. When the chain is pulled, the zipper glides upwards and zips the dress.
When not in use, the chain and hook are stored inside the metal box. One end of the chain is permanently attached to the inside of the box, so it won't get lost. If you want to close the box while the chain is outside of it, there is a little cut out on one side of the box to lay the chain through in order to securely close the box.
By the way, this is also great for people who have arthritic conditions that makes grabbing ahold of a small item such as a zipper difficult.
If you're in to steampunk items, another option would be to have the chain outside of the box and then place both ends of the chain into the indent that is on the side of the box and that would turn the piece into a necklace.
